Blending Boxing into MMA

By Personal trainer and Boxing coach, Scott Neal

When blending boxing into MMA, it really isn’t no different then blending other styles of fighting. In Mixed Martial arts, a fighter learns many styles of fighting such as Muay Thai, Karate, Ju Jitsu, wrestling..ect and also boxing. The beauty of blending styles is that each fighters gets take take a little of everything and fit it into their MMA game. Implementing boxing is no different. There are aspects of boxing that just doesn’t really fit into the MMA, and then there are things that work really well. One of the things I find that MMA fighters tweak from boxing to MMA is the stance for example. the boxer usually stands less squared up, not much of his body exposed, plus to also get his right hand ( assuming he or she is in a conventional stance ) more motion and punching power. The MMA fighter squares up slightly to have the ability to throw leg kicks on command and more efficient. On the other hand, both MMA fighters and boxers can use the same fighting range. What works the best from boxing into MMA simply is MASTERING THE BASICS and CUTTING OUT THE FAT ( eliminating unnecessary movements). Long range boxing works the best using basic boxing. Close range usually ends up into clinching or dirty boxing. Master the basics then add some fine tuning tools like feinting and other deceptive moves. Even with the difference in fighting gloves, the defense is slightly different. Fighting with 4 ounce gloves, the margin of error shrinks. In boxing, the hands do not have to be as high as in MMA…Mastering the basics, find out what works for YOU, fine tuning, tweaking, loving the fight game and being passionate in your craft are the keys in blending.
